Shade coffee farms promote genetic diversity of native trees

چکیده
when caterpillars fed on fruit-bearing pepper plants. Here, although initially feeding on leaves, the beet armyworms soon moved into the maturing fruits (Figure 1C). Our results indicate that visiting honeybees provide plants with a totally unexpected advantage: bees flying around plants inhibit the feeding intensity of herbivorous caterpillars, resulting in a clear reduction of leaf damage. Thus, honeybees not only transport pollen from flower to flower but in addition also reduce plant destruction by herbivores. A similar strategy has been described for extrafloral nectaries that attract ants [11]. We speculate that, apart from consumptive and noncomsumptive predator effects, pollinator–herbivore interactions may also be important factors to consider in attempting to understand community dynamics.

Native bees mediate long-distance pollen dispersal in a shade coffee landscape mosaic.
Coffee farms are often embedded within a mosaic of agriculture and forest fragments in the world's most biologically diverse tropical regions. Although shade coffee farms can potentially support native pollinator communities, the degree to which these pollinators facilitate gene flow for native trees is unknown. We examined the role of native bees as vectors of gene flow for a reproductively sp...
متن کاملA small-scale land-sparing approach to conserving biological diversity in tropical agricultural landscapes.
Two contrasting strategies have been proposed for conserving biological diversity while meeting the increasing demand for agricultural products: land sparing and land sharing production systems. Land sparing involves increasing yield to reduce the amount of land needed for agriculture, whereas land-sharing agricultural practices incorporate elements of native ecosystems into the production syst...
متن کاملConnecting sustainable agriculture and wildlife conservation: Does shade coffee provide habitat for mammals?
Shade coffee systems provide a refuge for biodiversity; however, research has been dominated by bird and insect studies with few studies that have focused on mammals living within coffee-dominated landscapes. Relative to other taxa studied, only 5% of the articles published on coffee and biodiversity pertain to mammals. We surveyed non-volant mammals, with an emphasis on small mammals, in 3 cof...
متن کاملCoffee landscapes as refugia for native woody biodiversity as forest loss continues in southwest Ethiopia
Land-use changes threaten biodiversity and ecosystem services. Some of the last remaining forest fragments in Ethiopia, and the world’s only habitats that retain genetically diverse wild Arabica coffee populations, have experienced rapid recent conversion to coffee farms, plantations and agricultural fields. We examined patterns of remnant woody plant diversity in the remaining forests, and ass...
متن کاملWoody plant diversity and structure of shade-grown-coffee plantations in northern Chiapas, Mexico.
Shade-grown coffee is an agricultural system that contains some forest-like characteristics. However, structure and diversity are poorly known in shade coffee systems. In 61 coffee-growers' plots of Chiapas, Mexico, structural variables of shade vegetation and coffee yields were measured, recording species and their use. Coffee stands had five vegetation strata. Seventy seven woody species most...
